Maui Activities

Maui is a wonderfully diverse island, with an abundance of activities, self-guided and guided. When you make a reservation with me, I send you my Maui to-do list, my insiders guide to enjoying Maui and optimizing your stay here. It includes suggestions for car rentals, farmers markets, restaurants of all categories, and equipment rental companies that deliver.

For now, here is a brief preview:

While you are still back home and want to check the weather here, use this website: http://www.hawaiiweathertoday.com/. Glenn James lives on Maui and really understands our Hawaiian weather patterns.

Our newspaper, The Maui News, lists activities and special events: www.mauinews.com, especially on Thursdays, in the section called "The Scene". The Saturday edition lists the locations of all kinds of diverse places to worship by denomination.

There are a multitude of activities available here and as a result, there are a massive number of purveyors of luaus, snorkel trips, zip-lines, horse stables, golfing, deep-sea fishing, ATV Tours, guided hiking trips, day trips to Pearl Harbor - and pretty much anything else you can dream up!

  • To help you sort through the options and find the best fit for your party, I recommend Tom Barefoot's Tours: http://www.tombarefoot.com/. They cover all the islands, so they can help you with everything if you are ‘island hopping'. Mention my name for special treatment!
  • My favorite agent there is Andreas, andreas@tombarefoot.com or 1-(888) 222-3602. Locally, his number is 808-244-6200, 808-281-2757 (mobile).
If you are a scuba diver, or want to learn, my husband, Steve Juarez, runs a dive shop in Lahaina, Hawaiian Rafting Adventures / Dive Maui, www.hawaiianrafting.com. His is a full service dive shop, with experienced dive instructors, the best scuba gear for sale, daily dive trips to the island of Lanai and high quality rental equipment. He has been in business on Maui since 1985.

The road to Hana can't really be appreciated in one day, so I recommend staying overnight or even 2 nights. This way you can enjoy the beautiful beaches and hiking trails there. For special events, this is a fantastic resource: http://www.hanaculturalcenter.org/.

We are especially blessed to have a full service performing arts venue here, The Maui Arts and Cultural Center: www.mauiarts.org/calendar.html.
  • In early 2011, they brought us artists as diverse as Grammy winning Hawaiian musicians (Slack Key Masters), Leo Kottke, Kathy Griffin, Ladysmith Black Mombazo, Takacs String Quartet with Joyce Yang on the piano, the Maui Pops Orchestra, a hula competition, the New Shanghai Circus, several performances of opera, Los Lobos, Mark Morris Dance Company, several showings of just released independent cinema as part of the "FirstLight Film Festival", and Elton John. And that is a partial list!
